Gaming: Star Wars Battlefront

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! To me nothing says love like Star Wars and battling people. I know, I’m a classy one. I thought why not talk to you guys about a game I’ve been playing (and loving) since end of November!

starwars battlefield 2

For those of you who haven’t heard of Star Wars: Battlefront it is a first person shooter game where you can complete missions on different planets. Some times you play a part of the rebel alliance, and sometimes you’re part of the empire. You even get to play as Darth Vader!! Gives you the chance to do a bit of everything. From shooting guns and wielding lightsabers to driving AT-ATs and flying x-wings and shooting down TIE fighters. It is a game that immerses you in the battlefields of Star Wars.

I’ve been absolutely loving this game and it’s local multiplayer gameplay. I haven’t played this game much on my own, but it’s so much fun to battle against friends or work together as a part of the rebel alliance. There is the option to play by yourself or use online multiplayer, but I just love the interaction that comes with local multiplayer. There are even options to increase the difficulty if you’re a seasoned gamer. This game has provided hours of entertainment and is definitely worth checking out.

Gaming: Mario & Luigi Paper Jam

Around the beginning of December Nintendo released a new Mario game called Mario & Luigi Paper Jam. This weekend I found myself bored and at a loss for what to do, so I decided to download the game and give it a try. The idea of the game is pretty simple. The book containing the Paper Mario world was opened and all the characters from that world were released into the “real” world. Now there are two Bowsers and they’ve captured both the paper and real Peach in Bowser’s castle. Mario and Luigi now need to save both the princesses before they take over the mushroom kingdom.

I found this game to be very different from any Mario game I’ve ever played before. It honestly reminded me of the Pokemon games. You go through the world by following your route on the map to save the princesses. Along the way you battle Bowser’s troops while levelling up Mario and Luigi. The whole battle style is very much like Pokemon battles where you take turns attacking, and you get Exp. for every battle you win. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this at first, but it really works for this game and I found myself enjoying levelling up my characters. There is also an easy mode that you can turn on for battles if you’re new to this type of game or if you’re a younger player. I left this feature off, but I liked how it was there if you need help but it wasn’t forced on you if you didn’t want to use it.

One of the downsides to playing this game on an older 3DS instead of the New 3DS is I can’t really use the amiibo functions they have built into the game. The game allows you to create custom amiibo characters to battle with in the game. I haven’t really looked into the different options and specifics of this feature at this point. I don’t have any amiibo right now anyways so they would be of no use to me at this point, but I’m honestly not going to buy an amiibo reader just so I can use them on my older 3DS.

All in all I think Mario & Luigi Paper Jam is a really good game even if it isn’t what you’d traditionally expect a Mario game to be like. The one thing I really liked about this game is it does not baby you like I found previous Mario games did (looking at you Super Mario 3D Land). The game is a bit of a challenge which makes it way more enjoyable. Besides, there’s always the option to make the game easier if you don’t enjoy the struggle.

Gaming: Settlers of Catan

Yay! It’s day 7 of Blogmas and I’m still here! Considering I only decided to do Blogmas on November 30th I’d say I’m doing pretty well. For today’s post I thought it would be nice to talk about one of my new favourite tabletop games.

Many of you may have heard of Settlers of Catan before. It has become quite a popular game over the past few years. It’s a very fun game that seems complicated at first, but after getting through your first game it is actually quite easy. It’s basically a game of trading resources and building roads and settlements. The game is won by the person that gets 10 victory points first. These can be won in a number of ways. Some ways to get victory points include building settlements, having the largest army, or having the longest road.

I really enjoyed this game because its so well rounded. You never really know how far ahead someone is until the end of the game. It is also easy for someone who is lagging behind to jump into first. It also is very family friendly and doesn’t result in everyone hating each other in the end (like Monopoly). If you’re looking for a new board game to play and don’t mind taking a bit of time to learn the rules, I’d definitely suggest checking out Settlers of Catan.

And just as an aside, I’ve been loving doing blogmas, however the posts may stop for a little bit (don’t worry they’re all planned out and will go out eventually). I’ve just been very sick lately so if a post doesn’t make it out on time it just means I haven’t been well enough to perfect it. Hopefully that doesn’t happen, but if it does I’m very sorry and the post will make its way up on the site in the near future.

Gaming: Just Dance 2015

This week I thought I’d do something a little fun and review the new game Just Dance 2015 for Wii U. This game has been out for about 3 months already, and it seemed like an interesting game to try out. I haven’t tried any previous games in the Just Dance series, but I have had a dance based game before for the Wii.

Just Dance 2015 was everything I would want in a dance based video game. To start, the song selection was great. There is a wide variety of popular songs from 2014, and there is also the ability to purchase extra songs from previous years (though there are plenty of songs included in the game so purchasing new content isn’t necessary). The game itself was very fun and easy to get the hang of. You basically follow the dancer on-screen while holding the Wii remote. I was worried it wouldn’t be very sensitive to the different movements, but I was pleasantly surprised it catches the movements easily. The game also allows you to compete against other players around the world and challenge them if you have an internet connection for your Wii U. I wasn’t expecting this to be part of the game, but it has become one of my favourite parts. It’s fun to play by yourself, but it’s even more fun to play with other people.

All-in-all I found this to be a fantastic game. If you like dancing or dance-based video games then I suggest checking this title out. It’s a great game to get you up and moving while having fun at the same time.
